Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel DuchampEN / Lyenn is Fréderic Jacques, a rare talent combining jazz, improvisation and a beautiful voice. His music, like his identity has many different roots; born in Belgium but with a British mother Lyenn has been exposed to a rich variety of cultures and sounds from a young age, and these influences are clearly heard in his music. No two sets are ever the same, which is definitely part of the appeal: you only have to have listened to Lyenn play for a few minutes to see that the improvisation is instantaneous, and the enjoyment genuine. His debut album sounds like an incredible mix of Robert Wyatt, Frank Zappa and 16 Horsepower. It was recorded with Marc Ribot who was genuinely amazed by the unique talent of Jacques. Saturday he will present his record together with Ceramic Dogs' Ches Smith and Shahzad Ismaily. Just like the artist in whose honor the band is named, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp likes to mess with the conventions of pop just as much as the Dadaist Duchamp liked to mess with the conventions of art. This Geneva-based, six-piece band crafts pop tunes, but not without tearing them apart through vocalist Liz's shriekings, erratic drum bangings, uncommon instruments, noise erruptions, … They fuse the wild and free attitude of post punk with tropical and afrobeat vibes. Blasting trombones, skillfully played marimba, screaming vocals, roaring guitars. And then there's also a short last minute set by Carla Bozulich, Tara Barnes, Dominic Cramp, Michael Tracy and Andrea Serrapiglio

FR / Fréderic Jacques est un guitariste hors –pair, capable de passer d’un blues classique à l’expérimentation sonique la plus débridée. Pour le projet Lyenn, il s’entoure de Shahzad Ismaily et Ches Smith, musiciens de Marc Ribot qu’on a pu voir récemment sous le nom de Ceramic dogs. On compare sa voix à celle David Eugene Edwards et leur collaboration a été décrite comme « proche d’une transe vaudou ». Ce n’est pas un hasard si Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp a décidé de voler son nom au plus célèbre des surréalistes : comme lui, ils échappent aux conventions en mêlant post-punk, afro-beat et tropicalisme pour des concerts qu’on sait déjà festifs et envoutant. Menés par une vocaliste hors-norme qui s’adapte aussi bien aux échappées noise qu’aux dérapages ska, ils emmènent contrebasse, marimbas, trombones etc., vers des contrées inconnues et surprenantes. Loin du dadaïsme, ils doivent aussi leur nom aux orchestres congolais, tel le « tout puissant ok jazz », auxquels ils doivent une énergie dansante qui ne laissera aucun de vous immobile.

Fréderic JacquesNL / Lyenn is de Belg Fréderic Jacques, een zeldzaam talent dat een kruising tussen jazz en singersongwriter brengt. Zijn debuutplaat klinkt als een geniale mix van Robert Wyatt, Frank Zappa en 16 Horsepower. The Jollity of My Boon Companion werd in New York opgenomen met Marc Ribot die naar eigen zeggen overdonderd was door het uitzonderlijk talent van Jacques. Volgende zaterdag komt hij persoonlijk zijn muziek voorstellen met Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dogs) en Shahzad Ismaily (Bonnie Prince Billy, Yoko Ono, ...). Een Belg met internationale uitstraling, een klasse apart. Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp houdt ervan - net zoals hun voorbeeld - om met conventies te knoeien. Waar de Dadaïst Duchamp dat deed met kunst, is het vakgebied van het Zwitserse Orchestre de ruime popmuziek. Hun jazzy pop wordt haast letterlijk uit elkaar gescheurd door het gekrijs van zangeres Liz, ontploffende drums, schreeuwende trombones, maar weet net op juiste moment weer terug te plooien tot haast perfecte popmuziek - dankzij een fantastische marimbapartij of de juiste set gitaarakkoorden. Ze smelten de wilde attitude van postpunk samen met de sfeer van afrobeat en tropical. Op het eerste gezicht een absurde combinatie, maar wel eentje dat perfect werkt in de eclectische wereld van Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp. Hun sets razen voorbij, springend van het ene genre naar het andere – als een soort van avant garde cabaret dat je in een voortdurende staat van verwondering brengt. En dan is er nog een korte last minute set van Carla Bozulich, Tara Barnes, Dominic Cramp, Michael Tracy en Andrea Serrapigli.
