NL / Koen Nutters en Christophe Meierhans vormen samen TAPE THAT, geluidskunstenaars in de ruimste betekenis van het woord. Ze beperken zich niet tot een bepaalde format, maar banen zich een weg doorheen installaties, concerten, cd's, … Geluid is voor hen steeds een vertrekpunt, een manier om naar de dingen te kijken. Zo is Tape That bijzonder geïnteresseerd in restgeluid. Het geluid dat eigenlijk niet bij de kern hoort, maar wat noodzakelijkerwijs toch hoorbaar is. Ze zoeken naar de verbindingen die een geluid met haar omgeving aangaat, wat het geluid uitbreidt, beperkt of vervormt. Men kan het gerust vergelijken met een schilder. Stopt een schilderij aan de binnenkant van de kader? Of hoort de kader er helemaal bij? Speelt de muur waaraan het schilderij hangt een rol van betekenis? De belichting? Die zie je toch ook wanneer je enkel naar het schilderij probeert te kijken? De essentie van Tape That bestaat er in verder te kijken dan het schilderij – ofte het geluid – zelf. Het grootste gedeelte van hun werk vatten ze samen in hun “Catalogue”, een groeiende verzameling korte muzikale composities die meer te zien hebben met een folder van staaltjes in een tapijtenwinkel, eerder dan met muzieknummers. De eerste catalogus bevat ongeveer 120 werken, gemaakt met field recordings, synthetische geluiden, stem, gemanipuleerde klanken, fragmenten van bestaande muziek, ... Samen vormen ze een kleine bibliotheek van onconventionele en speelse musique concrète. In les ateliers claus zullen zij hun catalogus uitbreiden aan de hand van het akoestische ecosysteem van een rockband: gitaar, bas, keyboard, drums, microfoons. Deze keer wijden ze hun taxonomische obsessie volledig aan een pseudo-wetenschappelijke dissectie van een klassieke rockband   •••   FREDERIC ALSTADT is de geluidsarchitect van de Ångström studio in Schaarbeek. Gespecialiseerd in subfrequenties en diepe bassen gaat hij les ateliers claus voorzien van een innemende fysieke geluidservaring waar de grens tussen luisteren en voelen in twijfel wordt getrokken. Dampende infra-bassen gemaakt met behulp van een platenspeler doen het gebouw daveren. Hij stond onlangs nog op de Biënnale van Venetië op vraag van Claude Leveque.

FR / Avec TAPE THAT, les ateliers claus proposent leur troisième résidence d’artistes : des artistes mettent en place des dispositifs sonores et /ou visuels pendant plusieurs séances de travail, qui donnent lieu à un concert ou une performance. Koen Nutters et Christophe Meierhans explorent les différents espaces de restriction du son : en s’adaptant aux limites et contraintes de chaque projet, ils se penchent sur ce qui rentre en contact avec les sons et leur permettent de prendre leur vraie dimension dans l’espace et le temps. Le rendu de chacun de leurs différents projets et résidences prend la forme d’une publication appelée Catalogue, dont ils élaboreront aux ateliers un nouveau numéro. Catalogue #1 contient 120 entrées sonores, venues de musique préexistante, d’objets manipulés, de voix, etc. Tout ensemble constitue une base sonore à libre disposition, utilisée pour les concerts de Tape That. Aux ateliers claus, ils tenteront cette fois de disséquer ce qui fait la base sonore d’un groupe de rock classique. En lieu et place de leur bric-à-brac habituel, ils s’équiperont donc cette fois du conventionnel trio guitare/basse/batterie, ainsi que d’un système sonore sophistiqué, creusant ainsi le fond sonore d’un des éléments musical les plus présents de notre société sonique ••• FREDERIC ALSTADT, architecte sonore du studio Ångstrom, il explore la physicalité du son, l'instant où la vibration devient profondément corporelle, organique, palpable; les limites entre l'auditif et le sensible jusqu'à la perte de repère. C'est pour cela qu'il a été convié par Claude Lévêque afin de créer l'environnement sonore de son oeuvre: "le Grand Soir", présentée à la dernière Biennale de Venise. Il nous présentera ce soir sa performance sub turntablism. Autour d'une platine tourne-disque immobile, sans vinyle, inutile, victime d'une fin annoncée des supports d'enregistrements. Mais l'objet se rebelle, produisant dans sa lutte des drônes analogiques profonds et organiques. Bruitisme et calme méditatif se rejoignent.

EN / TAPE THAT are Koen Nutters and Christophe Meierhans. Their work is based on sound in a broad sense, not constrained to one specific format but rather constantly developing different paths, between installations, concerts, CD production, interventions, … Always according to the conditions and concerns of each project. Sound is the main focus, but only as a departure point, as a point of view. Tape That works with sound and its leftovers, or rather, with the sound of those particular bits that fall outside the original sound itself. They're seeking connections and interferences between sound manipulation and its contingencies, between sound and everything that is not the sound itself but comes inevitably in contact with it, constrains it, extends it. Compare it with a painting. Does a painting end with its frame, its wall, the way it receives light? For Tape That their very essence is to look beyond the painting, beyond the sound itself. The main body of their work lies in their Catalogue works. An on growing collection of short musical compositions, very much like swatches in a carpet store. Acoustical samples of possible and often invented larger sound situations. The first catalogue holds about 120 entries, made with field recordings, synthetic sounds, voice, manipulated sounds, excerpts of existing music. Together they form a small library of unconventional musique concrète. At les ateliers claus they will extend their catalogue with the exploration of the acoustical ecosystem of a rock band: guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, a microphone and a big P.A. System. They'll dedicate their taxonomic compositional frenzy to a quasi scientific dissection on stage of a classical rock band   •••   FREDERIC ALSTADT is the sound engineer behind studio Ångström in Schaarbeek. Specialized in sub & low frequencies he'll be presenting a physical sound experience in les ateliers claus, blurring the line between listening and feeling music. He was invited by Claude Leveque to create the soundscape of his work: "Le grand soir", presented at the last Venice Biennale. Analogue drones, rumbling noise and calm meditations created by nothing less than a turntable, a useless victim of a heralded end of the recording medium.
