NL / Fred Frith is een legendarisch gitarist. Oorspronkelijk in bands als Henry Cow en Art Bears om later te evolueren naar een heel rijke & diverse output die hij zowel solo als met The Residents, Naked City, Laswell’s Material & Skeleton Crew bij elkaar schreef. De laatste jaren was hij voornamelijk bezig met improvisatie en het componeren van muziek voor film, dans, ... hij is zelfs Professor Compositie aan het Mills College. Frith begon echter de complexe mechaniek in rockbands te missen. Het werken met het collectieve oor van de groep en zich engageren in een soort van natuurlijk democratisch proces. Hij besloot COSA BRAVA op te richten waarbij het motto was “If you pick the right players, chances are the music will take care of itself”. Met Zeena Parkins, Carla Kihlstedt, Matthias Bossi & The Norman Conquest heeft hij in ieder geval al een set veelbelovende namen die samen de meest opwindende grenzen van de rockmuziek verkennen ••• Als voorprogramma voert het Brusselse gezelschap JONAS ZUGZWANG werken uit van de gelijknamige en jammerlijk vergeten componist.
FR / COSA BRAVA est le groupe fondé en 2008 par le cultissime guitariste Fred Frith. Depuis la formation de Henry Cow, il est passé par un nombre considérable de genres musicaux, de l'improvisation à la musique contemporaine, sans jamais oublier son amour du rock et de la structure classique des chansons. Avec Cosa Brava, il revient à un rock presque classique, entouré de musiciens qui, s'ils savent improviser et expérimenter, savent rendre imparable les compositions de Frith. EN / COSA BRAVA is a quintet formed in March 2008 in Oakland, California by legendary multi-instrumentalist and composer Fred Frith. His career began as a folk and later rock musician – he co-founded Henry Cow in 1968 – but has since diversified into a number of different genres, from avant-jazz to contemporary classical music. The motivation behind the formation of Cosa Brava arose out of Frith's love of rock music in general and songs in particular. He said, "Over the years I’ve done a lot of improvising, and composed a lot of music on paper. I even somehow became a Professor of Composition! But I really miss what you can do with a rock band. I miss developing material through the push and pull of cooperative rehearsals, I miss the single-minded commitment to a group identity. The musicians in Cosa Brava can improvise, read scores, AND rock the house. … If you pick the right players, chances are the music will take care of itself.” And with band mates Zeena Parkins, Carla Kihlstedt, Matthias Bossi and the Norman Conquest there’s little doubt it will be anything less than great ••• The overlooked composer JONAS ZUGZWANG will be represented by 4 Bruxellois playing a selection of his rarely performed compositions.
