NL / "The Mourning Show" is een hedendaagse opera van ERGO PHIZMIZ. Het vertelt het verhaal van BBC Radio 2 ochtenddj Chris Evans die op een druilerige ochtend nietsvermoedend zijn laatste werkdag tegemoet gaat. Tijdens zijn radioprogramma wordt hij opgebeld door 3 vrouwen die aan een radioquiz willen meedoen. Langzaam maar zeker verliest hij al z’n redelijkheid gedurende zijn show, terwijl de vrouwen hem langzaam maar zeker letterlijk de waanzin in praten ... The Mourning Show werpt een eigenzinnige blik op de werking van radio, het occulte en de geschiedenis van de opera om tot een inventieve en zwartgallige hedendaagse opera te komen.  De muziek is van de hand van Ergo Phizmiz, los gebaseerd op componisten als Mozart en Monteverdi, maar opgenomen met technieken van de elektro-akoestische muziek.

Ancien présentateur de la mythique radio américaine WFMU, il explore tous les médias, du disque à la performance et se lance aujourd’hui dans le mini opéra "The Mourning Show" contant les aventures d'un DJ de la radio harcelé par trois auditrices. S'inspirant de son expérience radiophonique, Phizmiz démonte les mécanismes de communications entre l'animateur radio et ses auditeurs, avec un humour corrosif.

EN / One cold, winter’s morning, in the middle of a big, big freeze, BBC Radio 2 morning DJ Chris Evans embarks unwittingly upon his last ever show. Against the background of these harsh weather conditions, and a sinister, looming pandemic, three women telephone the DJ, ostensibly to tell him about their “Winter Warmers” of choice, and to take part in a phone-in quiz. What transpires is the gradual destruction of the DJ’s sanity as his show progresses, as the three callers subtly decimate his mind, leading at the end to his untimely death. This is an inventive and darkly comic take on the mechanics of radio, the occult and the history of opera. The music, simultaneously timeless and contemporary, takes models from Mozart, Monteverdi and Verdi, filtering structures through electro-acoustic recording techniques.
