INSTALLATION/PERFORMANCE: LOST SOUNDS/REVIVING SOULS on the 25th of November, 9PM
EN / Alchemical producer Eric Thielemans brings together visual artist Karolien Soete (Ghent) and composer/wind instrumentalist Alexander Berne (New York) and his own percussion based sound art to present Lost Sounds/Reviving Souls. A two week residence/installation featuring the new “light-portraiture” projection techniques of Soete and the sonic duo of Berne/Thielemans. The illuminated images are part of a continuing portrait study of Soete’s, culled from early 20th century photographic archives of so called lost souls, the “out of sight, out of their minds”, the relegated to obscurity inmates of the Guislain mental Institution, Ghent and The Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris. Berne/Thielemans will be sonically narrating the ephemeral projections with their increasingly well traveled “Pilgrimages of Music and Form”. More than homage, the artists would hope to create a ritualistic atmosphere of remembrance, a reviving of these special brothers and sisters of ours who were and perhaps still are mistreated...or not treated at all. The Iconic American photographer Tom Bianchi had this to say about Reviving Souls “The visualizations and music are amazing. I feel that something is going on – something at the edge of disorder – but I don’t know how to wrap my brain around it – “terrible beauty” is perhaps the closest I can come to articulating what I see and hear.“

NL / Voor zijn residentie in les ateliers claus nodigt Eric Thielemans twee artiesten uit: Karolien Soete en componist Alexander Berne. Samen komen ze Lost Sounds/Reviving Souls presenteren, een installatie/performance gebaseerd op projectietechnieken van Soete. Haar verlichte beelden zijn deel van een lopende portretstudie waarbij Soete's focus op portretten van het begin van de 20e eeuw ligt, beelden van zogenaamde “lost souls”, gekken, waanzinnigen, geesteszieken. Deze beelden haalde ze voornamelijk uit de archieven van het Guislain instituut en het Salpêtrière hospitaal. Haar projecties zullen sonisch weerspiegeld worden door “Pilgrimages of Music and Form” van Berne/Thielemans. Samen willen ze verder gaan dan een eenvoudige hommage, ze hopen een rituele atmosfeer van herdenking op te bouwen, een herleven van onze “speciale” broeders en zusters die vaak mis- of zelfs niet behandeld worden. De iconische fotograaf Tom Bianchi omschreef het project als volgt “The visualizations and music are amazing.
