NL / BXL/MINUIT op Theater Aan Zee van 31 juli tot 5 augusts 2010 in CLUB TERMINUS in het station van Oostende. De hoofdstad komt aan de Belgische kust zes nachten een feestje bouwen. Zij komt aan met de laatste trein, om met de eerste ochtendtrein weer naar huis te gaan. Op uitnodiging van het sympathieke zomerfestival TAZ te Oostende, doet Les Ateliers Claus te Sint Gillis Brussel een greep uit de muzikale onderbuik van de Belgische hoofdstad. Subjectief, divers, onvolledig, maar wel kwaliteit. Les Ateliers Claus bestaat vier jaar. Wij zijn een muziekcentrum, een artistieke werkplaats, een tank voor verbeelding.

NL / Het WILD CLASSICAL MUSIC ENSEMBLE werd geboren in 2007, toen ‘artistiek mentor’ Damien 4 artiesten met een mentale handicap ontmoette. Lynh, Johan, Rudy & Kim vormen de kern van het WCME en concentreerden zich oorspronkelijk op vrije improvisatie en geluidsexperimenten, wat meteen ook resulteerde in experimentele muzieknotaties. Na een tijd begonnen ze meer en meer de punk/rock riffs van gitarist Kim Verbeke in hun werk te gieten waardoor ze nu een erg open sound - van wilde oerpunk tot free rock - combineren met hun hoogst originele en eerlijke muziek. Onlangs brachten ze een fantastisch album uit op Sub Rosa. Wild, uitdagend, eerlijk, instinctief   •••    Damien Sabatier en Gerald Chevillon spelen al een jaar of 10 in verschillende projecten - trio Achile Blik, Tous Dehors, Leitmotiv Blastik Pertran... Met Antonin Leymarie - motor van het Surnatural Orchestra - en Joachim Florent - gekend van Jean-Louis en Radation 10 - blijven ze hun avontuurlijke pad volgen, maar ditmaal in een vrijere omkadering onder de naam IMPERIAL. Hun muziek kan nog best omschreven worden als een verzameling muzikale discussies waarbij ze etnische invloeden vermengen met industrial en jazz. Steeds spannend, overtuigend en vrijgevig.

FR / Le WILD CLASSICAL MUSIC ENSEMBLE est né de la rencontre de Damien Magnette, compositeur electro- accoustique bruxellois, sculpteur sonore et documentariste radiophonique, avec quatres artistes handicapés mentaux, grace à l’association wit.h, specialisée dans les missions artistiques à visées sociales. Les quatres artistes, pratiquant tous déjà quatres médiums artistiques différent, montrérent le talent et la volonté nécéssaire, et l ‘aventure commença ainsi. Basées sur l’improvisation et l’enérgie, les recherches du WCME s’ échapperent vite du champ strict de la spontanéité, pour s’orienter vers l’écriture de compositions. Grace au gutariste du groupe, leurs morceaux s’éloignent meme aujourd’hui de l’improvisation contemporaine pour s’enrichir de riffs punk-rocks. Leur premier album est sorti sur le label belge sub rosa, dans leur collection “ musique dans les marges”, gage indéniable de qualité et d’exigence   •••   Damien Sabatier et Gérald Chevillon jouent côte à côte depuis 10 ans au sein de multiples projets. Aujourd’hui,dans ce nouveau quartet ,ils continuent de partager cette aventure dans une formule plus souple,plus libre. Avec Antonin Leymarie,moteur du Surnatural Orchestra et Joachim Florent,contrebassiste, pilier du trio Jean-Louis et de Radiation 10, naît alors IMPERIAL, formation en gestation dont le langage s’invente à force d’échanges,d’improvisations, de propositions d’écritures,d’écoutes,de discussions. Le quartet propose des compositions particulièrement incisives , melant influences ethniques, industrielles et Jazz. Une rythmique précise et fiévreuse, l’utilisation de la famille des saxophones au complet nourrissent les ouïes d’une musique dont la raucité n’a d’égale que la générosité et la variété de timbres développée. Avec cette nouvelle formation, ils tracent une ligne musicale inventive aux contours accrocheurs, ce qui ne signifie pas " sans surprise " mais bien qu’elle agrippe le spectateur ébaubi par sa force de persuasion, sa vérité intrinsèque. Le souffle est là qui bouscule et dérange les codes par ses cousinages multiples et premiers.

EN / The WILD CLASSICAL MUSIC ENSEMBLE is a musical project that started in november 2007, when Damien met Lynh, Johan, Rudy and Kim, 4 artists with a mental disorder. These 4 artists are working in different fine art media yet showed a will and talent to make music. Originally they focused on free improvisation, sound and object experimentations tied together with orchestration signs and experimental music notations. Lately they have begun incorporating the punk/rock riffs from guitarist Kim Verbeke, broadening their sound into a free punk noise rock hybrid. Wild Classical Music Ensemble has one album out on Sub Rosa, a true diamond of the most basic and honest rock out there   •••    The past 10 years Damien Sabatier and Gerald Chevillon have been playing together in different constellations - trio Achile Blik, Tous Dehors, Leitmotiv Blastik Pertran... With Antonin Leymarie and Joachim Florent they continue their adventurous journey, but this time a bit more free and open, and under a new name: IMPERIAL. Their music is best described as a set of discussions with ethnical, industrial and jazz influences.

Jef Mercelis cancelled - replaced by Woudloper

NL / Hugo Race is van oorsprong een Australische muzikant, maar kan beter omschreven worden als een wereldburger, getuige de laatste 25 jaar tijdens dewelke hij in Italië, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Engeland en Amerika heeft gewoond. Hugo vertrekt van delta blues, jazz en punk maar keert z’n hand niet om voor wat hedendaagse pop of elektronische soundscapes. Hij betrad het internationale toneel als oprichter van Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, waarna hij de Australische cultband The Wreckery oprichtte. In 1989 bracht hij zijn eerste soloplaat “Rue Morgue Blues”, net op het moment dat de Berlijnse muur viel. Daarna zwierf hij nog 2 decennia door Europa terwijl hij 14 soloplaten opnam met HUGO RACE & THE TRUE SPIRIT. Hugo speelde eerder dit jaar nog in de Handelsbeurs in gent met Dirtmusic, maar in les ateliers claus brengt hij de songs die hem het nauwst aan het hart liggen ••• Jef Mercelis heeft helaas moeten afzeggen, maar we vonden een waardige vervanger in het nieuwe en interessante project Woudloper. Deltablues en allerhande veldopnames van etnische muziek afgewisseld met meer droney elementen worden impro-gewijs door de mangel gedraaid maar ook aan stukken gehakt en gestreeld door Bert Dockx (Flying Horseman, Dans Dans en Work ) op gitaar en efx, Patrick 'tricky' Clauwaert (Mercelis) op drums en Wimbo (Sixpack Romancer ) aan de draaitafels.

FR / Membre de Birthday Party, puis des Bad Seeds de Nick Cave, HUGO RACE est un des forgerons de ce son du" Bayou" venu d'Australie. Nomade, vivant à la fois en Italie, Angleterre ou Allemagne, il fonde en 1988 le collectif à géométrie variable True Spirit, dont le mélange de ce son de guitare comme "sali" et d'electronique leur a valu l'étiquette de "Transe blues-industrielle". Ne cessant de se renouveler tout au long de leur neuf albums, ils tournent sans cesse tout au long des années 90, laissant tout de meme à Hugo Race le temps de monter son propre studio d' enregistrement, ou il produit d'autres groupes mais aussi peaufine le son de ses albums solo, parfois contemplatifs, parfois sauvages. Le True spirit livre aujourd'hui une musique physique et intense, nourrie des voyages de ses membres et de leurs échanges autour du monde ••• Malheureusement Jef Mercelis a annulé son concert, il sera remplacé par le nouveau et interessant projet Woudloper (Bert Dockx / Patrick Clauwaert / Wim Lots)

If the eternal delta blues, jazz, and punk are his basic references, Hugo’s songwriting draws on pop culture from rock to electronic soundscapes. First introduced to the international stage as a founding member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, Hugo then founded the seminal Australian art-punk cult band The Wreckery. In early 1989 Hugo released his debut solo album “Rue Morgue Blues” as the Wall fell, beginning two decades based in Europe and the production of 14 HUGO RACE & THE TRUE SPIRIT albums. Besides gracing our country with his other band “Dirtblues” at the Handelsbeurs in Ghent, he plays les ateliers claus with the music he is all about: Hugo Race & The True Spirit   •••   Unfortunately, Jef Mercelis had to cancel his concert, but we found a worthy replacement act in Woudloper. A new project consisting of Bert Dockx, Patrick Clauwaert and Wim Lots.

NL / Behalve de backingband van Fréderic Lyenn Jacques te zijn, hebben Gil Mortio (Pierre Vervloesem, Mud Flow), Clément Nourry (Alimentation Générale) en Jean-Phillipe De Gheest (Mauro Pawlowski, aMute) nog een project gemeenschappelijk. JOY AS A TOY maakt - in hun eigen woorden - “wasted beach boys rock ‘n’ roll with bad english accent”. Of met andere woorden: een hybride van explosieve rock à la Deerhoof en de poetische melancholie van kleppers als Talking Heads en Robert Wyatt. Joy As A Toy deinst er ook niet voor terug om uit meer jazzy en psychedelische vaatjes te tappen, waardoor ze tot één van de meeste energieke rockbands uit het Brusselse bestempeld kunnen worden. In les ateliers claus komen ze hun debuutplaat “Valparaiso” voorstellen, en ze beloofden om les ateliers te laten kolken van energie   •••   Charlie Looker, een avant-garde singer-songwriter, is langzaam maar zeker uitgegroeid tot één van de meest intense zangers van de New Yorkse underground, getuige zijn samenwerkingen met Dirty Projectors en Glenn Branca. Zijn hoofdbezigheid, EXTRA LIFE, combineert elementen van middeleeuwse zang, metal, hardcore, donkere neofolk en abstract modernisme in een experimentele songs die van broze ballads tot industriële aanvallen op de trommelvliezen reiken. Na de affiche gedeeld te hebben met bands als Sonic Youth, Sunn 0))) en My Bloody Valentine zijn we hoogst vereerd om hen in onze kleine zaal te ontvangen.

FR / JOY AS A TOY réunit quelques uns des meilleurs activistes de la guitare et du rock belge: quand ils ne partagent pas la scène avec Frédéric Jacques au sein de Lyenn ou avec leurs divers projets, Gil Mortio, Clément Nourry et Jean-Philippe de Gheest produisent un rock hybride, mélange explosif entre le funk blanc enérgique des Talking heads et la poésie mélancolique d'un Robert Wyatt, le tout saupoudré d’une bonne dose de second degré dont le ton n'est pas sans rappeler les iconoclastes américains de Deerhoof. Mais dans Joy as a Toy, le monstre psychédélique n'est jamais bien loin, avec leurs délires soniques brefs, bruts et concrets,accompagnés par le vibraphone berlinois d'Els Vandeweyer. Ce concert est l'occasion de célébrer la sortie de leur premier album Valparaiso, sorti sur l'excellent label Cheap Satanism, dont ils joueront les morceaux pour la première fois en public !     •••   Charlie Looker a collaboré avec Glenn Branca ou les Dirty Projectors avant de former EXTRA LIFE avec le violon de Caley Monahon-Ward, la basse de Tony Gedrich et les percussions de Nick Podgurski. Épique et parfois presque symphonique, la musique d'Extra Life associe des influences médiévales, un folk sombre et des eléments bruitistes. Le tout déroute, surprend, avant d'emmener dans un univers parallèle, à la fois abstrait et physique. Après avoir partagé la scène avec Sun O )))), Sonic Youth ou My Bloody Valentine, ils viendront faire trembler les murs des ateliers !

Extra Life combines elements of Medieval chant, metallic hardcore, dark neofolk, abstract modernism and lush pop - from fragile acoustic ballads to industrial symphonic assaults. After sharing bills with Sonic Youth, Sunn 0))) & My Bloody Valentine, they’re gracing our small venue with a much welcomed visit!

NL / THE TRANCE FORMATION verkent de grenzen van trancemuziek op basis van Afrikaanse trancemuziek. Kenmerkend is de monotone, nooit aflatende cadans die langzaam evolueert en muteert. Op die manier raakt de luisteraar ‘in trance’, alsof hij letterlijk in de muziek wordt opgezogen en tussen de noten en klanken zwemt. The Trance Formation bestaat uit Giovanni Di Domenico - die we nog kennen van zijn buitengewone “Piano, Forte” installatie, Pascal Rousseau, Olivier Taskin, Abdelhadi Erribahi en Grégoire Tirtiaux    ••• Vernoemd naar het Koreaanse word voor maan, Dal, roept schaduwtheater DALADALA een vrouwelijk en sensueel universum op. Beïnvloed door Méliès en de ontluikende cinema van zijn tijd alsook oude Aziatische verhaaltjes. Opgericht door Juhyun Choi en aangevuld door Sunyoung Choi, danseres, en Pak Yan Lau, een veelzijdige muzikante die deel uitmaakt van Crappy Mini Band en onlangs nog met Piano, Forte speelde   •••     TATSUHISA YAMAMOTO werd in 1982 in Japan geboren. Als een akoestische drummer pur sang, speelt hij voornamelijk geïmproviseerde muziek bij een heleboel verschillende bands en projecten. Zij akoestische solo performances zijn succesvol in de manier waarop Yamamoto dynamiek, poloritmiek en melodie combineert. Van furieuze wervelstormen tot een delicate techniek. Als interessante voetnoot kunnen we er niet onder uit dat hij tegenwoordig regelmatig met Jim O’Rourke op een podium staat ... voorwaar geen slechte referentie.

FR / A la base de la musique jouée par THE TRANCE FORMATION, toutes les musiques de transe des quatres coins du monde. Leur progression, l'évolutive montée du rythme invitent l'auditeur à la transe et à la danse. Les Trance formers sont Giovanni Di Domenico, Pascal Rousseau , Olivier Taskin et Abdelhadi Erribahi. Grégoire Tirtiaux les accompagne au sax et au guembri   •••   Formé à partir du mot Dal, qui désigne la lune en coréen, le nom de la compagnie d' ombres chinoises Daladala évoque un univers féminin et sensuel, également influencé par Mélies et les débuts du cinéma. Fondé par la coréenne Juhyun Choi, le théatre de DALADALA joue sur l'aspect mystérieux des ombres chinoises. Elle est accompagné par la danseuse Sunyoung Choi et la musicienne Pak Yan Lau, membre des biens connus Crappy mini band   •••    Tout jeune batteur japonais, TATSUHISA YAMAMOTO joue un set solo mélodique et progressif, tout à fait dans l'esprit chamanique de la soirée. EN / THE TRANCE FORMATION is a connection between past and present. Trance music from around the world is used as a basis to a constant reinvention of itself. The music keeps on moving and changing slowly, inviting the listener into a state of deep trance. Once there the music seems to shift and transform endlessly. The formation is composed of several trance formers: Giovanni Di Domenico on keys, Pascal Rousseau on Tuba, Olivier Taskin and Abdelhadi Erribahi on percussion. Grégoire Tirtiaux takes care of the bar sax and guembri duties   •••   The Shadow theatre company DALADALA takes its name from the korean word Dal, meaning moon. Founded by Juhyun Choi, it shows a feminine and sensual universe, formally influenced by early Melies movies. Together with her dancer sister Sunyoung Choi and Pak Yan Lau from belgian collective Crappy mini Band, they play a mysterious and evocative theatre where shadows come and go, reminding us of ancient asian stories  •••   TATSUHISA YAMAMOTO was born in 1982 in Japan. As a pure acoustic drummer, he plays primarily improvised music while participating in a variety of bands and projects. His solo acoustic performance succeeds in combining dynamism, melodicism and polyrhythm, fusing overwhelming volume with delicate technique. As an interesting footnote: he’s one of the current live collaborators of Jim O’Rourke

NL / CHARLIE O is misschien nog wel het meest gekend voor zijn optredens in de hilarische pornoparodieën van John B. Root. Maar zoals hij met Peter Von Poehl, Mendelson en The Recyclers aantoonde is Charlie O vooral een begenadigd organist. Samen met drummers Jean-Michel Pires en Sylvain Jousson speelt hij lange improvisatiesessies (3 à 4 uur!) tussen krautrock en be bop - met avontuurlijke passages die regelmatig aan het werk van Medeski, Martin & Wood doen denken.

FR / Fidèle du défunt label Rectangle, CHARLIE O est aussi acteur des films porno-parodiques de John B. Root et organiste virtuose auprès de Peter Von Poehl, Mendelson et The Recyclers. Associés aux batteurs Jean-Michel Pires et Sylvain Jousson, il joint à son orgue deux batteries pour de longues sessions d’improvisation entre krautrock et be-bop, qui ne sont pas sans rappeler les grandes heures du trio Medeski, Martin & Wood

EN / CHARLIE O is a dandy, famous character yet most of all a brilliant organ player. Able to play in any situation, from sleazy cafés to the biggest venues, not mentionning in the background of x-rated movies, he chose for this trio to be accompanied by two exceptionnal drummers, Jean-Michel Pires and Sylvain Jousson. As a trio they released an amazing record on the french label Microbe, which reminds us of krautrock as well as hard bop.
