50Y SERGE SYNTH - Thomas Ankersmit
Floris Vanhoof Concerts
Artist talk
presented by les ateliers claus and ancienne belgique
1973 is not just the year the first call was made over a mobile phone, fibre optics were invented or IBM introduced the barcode standard, it is also the year Russian-American composer Serge Tcherepnin assembled and sold the first 20 copies of his famous Serge synthesiser.
The instrument can safely stand alongside other bigger synthesiser brands like Buchla, Moog and ARP and has been very influential in (experimental) electronic music through artists like Karlheinz Stockhausen, Ivan Tcherepnin (brother of), Malcolm Cecil, Frank Zappa... who started working with the instrument very early on. More recently, artists and bands like Radiohead, Jim O'Rourke, Sonic Boom, Sarah Davachi and, of course, Thomas Ankersmit and Floris Vanhoof have created modern compositions with the synthesiser.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the instrument, AB and Les Ateliers Claus are bringing together these two latest artists who, through a lecture/artist talk, Q&A and 2 live sets, will introduce you to this unique electronic instrument.
thomas ankersmit (nl) (based berlin)
Thomas Ankersmit is a musician/sound artist operating from Berlin and Amsterdam. He plays the Serge Modular synthesiser both live and in the studio and has already collaborated with artists such as Phill Niblock and Valerio Tricoli. His music has been released on Shelter Press, PAN and Touch, among others. In his work, Ankersmit combines intricate sonic details and raw electric power, with a very physical and spatial experience of sound. Acoustic phenomena such as 'infrasound' and otoacoustic emissions (sounds emanating from inside the head, generated by the ears themselves) play an important role in his work, as does a deliberate, creative misuse of his equipment.
floris vanhoof (be)
Floris Vanhoof does not need much introduction in our area. He has been a fixture on the experimental avant-garde art scene for many years. Vanhoof combines self-made music circuits and 'forgotten' projection techniques for installations, expanded cinema performances, films and in his releases.
He translates one medium into another to discover how our perception works and what new perspectives emerge.
He himself puts it this way: 'Part of my practice is to carefully dose sounds and visuals.Considering how much to show or let hear and what to omit. Subtly overloading our perception so our imagination goes to work. Looking inside and outside. Creating small problems that put big ones into context.'
Throughout his work, Vanhoof keeps returning to his home-made Serge synth.
After an extensive tour of Canada and the US earlier this year, he will tour Japan with his blood brother Lieven Martens in May, after which he will travel to Les Ateliers Claus to help celebrate the 540th anniversary of the Serge synth.
